Follow-up to the Parliamentary Committee Hearings

When: 19-Jul-05 2:00 p.m
Where: Council Chamber at Metro Hall , Corner of King and John Streets, Toronto, Ontario

HRSDC – Now is our chance to make real change! Community Meeting, July 19.

Community agencies and their clients in Toronto continue to feel the negative impact of funding decisions by HRSDC. In addition to the “Call for Proposals” process which has resulted in significant disruption to service for clients, threatened the closure of a number of community organizations, and weakened collaboration in the community sector. Additional changes threaten the continued existence of such valuable organizations as the Scarborough Storefront.

The response from the community resulted in a Parliamentary Committee review of the HRSDC process, with recommendations for change which are now on the Minister’s desk, as well as commitments from a number of Toronto MP’s to address the concerns which were raised.

To help build the community response to these destructive initiatives, the CSPC-T is joining with community partners (including OCASI, CED Network, Learning Enrichment Foundation, and YWCA Toronto), to hold a meeting on Tuesday, July 19, at 2:00 PM in the Council Chamber at Metro Hall (corner of King and John Streets), to provide community organizations with an opportunity to:

- hear the results of the Parliamentary Committee report (and minority report);
- update on what has happened with the agencies affected by the call for proposals;
- find out about the new threats to community organizations;
- offer the MP’s who have been pursuing this issue an opportunity to report on their progress;
- outline our plans for action on this issue over the summer; and
- strategize further about how best to pursue this issue with the new Minister, the Department, and the government.
